A healthy life depends upon maintaining a balance between our psychological input and output. Input includes the things that nourish and sustain us: rest, relationships, recreation, spirituality, time in nature, learning, and the support we receive from others. Output includes the energy we expend through work, caring responsibilities, problem-solving, decision-making, and meeting the demands of daily life. When our output consistently exceeds our input, we can begin to feel exhausted, irritable, overwhelmed, or emotionally depleted. Conversely, when we make time to replenish ourselves, we build resilience and are better able to cope with life's challenges. Just as a car needs fuel to make it run, our emotional and psychological wellbeing depends on ensuring that what we give out is balanced by what we take in. Developing awareness of this balance can help us recognise when we need to slow down, seek support, or engage in activities that restore and renew us.
